Building my first 486 PC // Pixel Fragment
I rescued a huge collection of mid-90s computers from being recycled, and I decided I finally have no excuse not to build a 486 system! Except of course... I have no idea what I'm doing.

And FX series up to 5600 was last series which supported all nvidias features such as table fog 8bit textures. So yes, fx5200 64bit version still can be a good choice. What type of a driver did you use? My current is 56.xx or 45.xx for XP, and 43.xx for win98.

Great Video Great Post very nice.. In my Opinion... and my experience.. Doom 95 and Quake 3 Arena wow.. 1998 - 2001 had some of the best years of gaming in history and great new age graphic cards and Nvidia and ATI went head to head... MatroxG400Max was untouchable with bump Mapping !!! and graphic quality SAD shitty D3D drivers made it's performance suck. But you could use !!! OPEN GL and GLIDE Voodoo drivers in game on the Matrox back then making it FLY !!! look outstanding and destroy the other companies back then but nobody knew. Later Matrox couldn't keep up High prices at half the performance just well sad really. Parahelia was a nice idea again drivers and high prices low performance made it fail Great tech though ! Matrox does Corporate anyway Huge money..! Military and Medical and computer design specialty cards Nvidia and AMD do not only now Nvidia has caught up.

At the time the biggest reason to buy Voodoo was Glide - anything with glide looked and ran amazing compared to it's direct 3D version. Glide was far less CPU intensive and far better optimised than the versions of Direct3D available at the time. Comparing and looking at it today with the optimised drivers and direct 3d versions available is not a valid comparison to how it looked and ran when these cards were released. My memory of it was anything direct 3D sucked, looked like crap and ran choppy when compared to a voodoo and the Glide API which gave you smooth consistent frame rates and quality bilinear filtering making textures smooth and non blocky. This meant anything that wasn't voodoo was mediocre in comparison. It was voodoo or go home - this was the case until the Geforce range of cards came along....Riva was rubbish in comparison and everything else was even worse. The problem with the Banshee at the time, besides the missing TMU was Glide compatibility was sketchy at best - a lot of games didn't work properly or ran badly, and since what i said about Glide being the main (if not only reason) to get a voodoo at the time, then if glide didn't work - the banshee was crap also.

Doom 3 was stunning on release, it instantly became the new gpu testing benchmark, the only other that had a bigger impact was crisis! When Doom 3 released i had just upgraded to a radeon 9800 Pro, with my high end gear all overclocked and water cooled in the days before you could even buy water cooling gear such as pumps, blocks and rads, I had a self made wc loop! The card didn't need it but with my fsb, gpu and cpu all over volted and clocked, I was getting butter smooth fps in Doom 3 at high res and max settings. I will never forget the look on my mates face when he saw the graphics and witnessed the high resolution! He said how console gaming had a long way to go and he didn't realise the clarity that pc gamers were playing with! Bearing in mind that at that time they were playing ps2 games on old crt televisions with resolutions not much higher than the game boy screen! So resolutions way higher than 1080p at a time when HD tvs didn't exist, was too much for his brain! He finally conceded that day that pc gaming was by far, the best way to go! My 9800 Pro ran this game like a dream too, back then I was all team red because I refused to pay 3 x the price for a gpu just because it gave slightly better visuals and half the games had a 10fps increase over the top ati card and the other half were identical fps! Same with processors, back then I was full on amd and radeon! The early 2ks were the absolute best time for pc gaming. We experienced ALL the original game types, the advent of overclocking, modding, cooling and case design and all the important changes! First cpu to hit 1000mhz! First dual core cpu's! First double gpu builds via crossfire and SLI, ddr ram, high res and high hz gaming! It all happened in the early to mid 2ks and I'm so glad that was the peak of my gaming years!

I don't suppose this has Windows 98 drivers? Thinking about getting a PCI-PCIe bridge and an old GPU for virtualization, because the few 3D acceleration options for Windows 98 virtualization that do exist, are not performant. I'm going to need some sort of GPU passthrough, but Windows 98 supports few if any native PCIe cards.

Just came across your video. I picked up an Athlon XP 1800+ machine, has an ATi 8500 128MB AGP version in it. VGA and S-Video only. 2D seems to work fine in Windows XP (Rollercoaster Tycoon, Bejeweled, etc) but if you try and install the ATI 6.11 Catalyst drivers, the screen goes black. If you load the drivers manually through device manager, the drivers load but anything 3D rendering is fully corrupt/sometimes black screens. Only recovery method is to power off the machine and back on. Have a 9600XT 256mb on the way from ebay, so hopefully that works. :D

I was lucky enough to get an FX 5800 (non ultra) card as part of a recycle lot for $0. Its not a terrible card, at least for the Pentium-3 era retro box Its planned for. On launch I bought a dumb FX 5200 card, worst card ever (except what it replaced, a GeForce4 MX something, rebadged GF2).

I have owned one other Nvidia card in my life. A 6800GT. It didn't suck but I replaced it with an X800XT just because. I'm still pissed with the X1800XT to this day, because ATI released the X1900 XT just 3 months after releasing the X1800XT with a pretty significant jump in shader performance. ATI obviously knew the X1800XT was a flawed GPU but released it anyway. Imagine AMD or Nvidia releasing a top end card then 3 months later release another top end card with a 30 to 40% performance jump, the backlash would be unimaginable today.

Mini ITX case, motherboard and Q6600 was given to me for free as 'some dual core'. Q9400 cost me $12, bought memory for $20, GTX 660 was $30 during the GPU shortage, and I slapped a Sata SSD in there.

Star Wars Episode One Racer was a great game that I still own, and play it to this day on one of my retro Windows 98se computers. I learned alot over the years also, in 1997 I bought a new computer, I added a 3dfx Monster 3D video card shortly thereafter, I was hooked on 3D gaming after that, and the rest is history. Since then I learned how to buy old computers, and upgrade them, and it's been alot of fun, and very satisfying. I have too many games for any one person to ever play, and I love them all. :) This is a great channel for the inexperienced to learn from, I watch it because I love the hardware, and gaming just as much!
